Punch Upon a Time Pocket Item Categories

How every Pocket Item in the launch build groups by role — and when to bind each one.

Last updated:

Pocket Items are the single most flexible tool in Punch Upon a Time. The launch build ships 40+ items, and every item falls into one of five categories: offensive, defensive, mobility, support, or chaos. This page explains the philosophy behind the item system, breaks down each category with item-by-item usage notes, and covers the economy rule that decides what you bind before the round loads. For the canonical item list, see the Item List page. For tier rankings, see the Best Items page.

The Pocket Item philosophy

Pocket Items are designed to expand your character’s kit without redefining it. Every pilot can carry one Pocket Item per round, and the item you choose changes how your character plays for that round, not how your character plays forever. This makes Pocket Items the most flexible strategic layer in Squad Saga — your squad’s two item picks per round can completely change the win condition.

The five categories map to five win conditions:

  • Offensive items convert neutral play into kills.
  • Defensive items convert incoming pressure into survival windows.
  • Mobility items convert positioning into tempo.
  • Support items convert squad coordination into resource advantage.
  • Chaos items convert reads into round swings.

The best pilots carry one Pocket Item from a category that complements their character’s kit. The strongest squads carry one Pocket Item from a category that complements the squad’s composition.

The Pocket Item economy

You carry one Pocket Item per round. The item is bound before the round loads and cannot be swapped mid-round. Most items have a 45–120 second cooldown, which means you can expect to use the same item two or three times per Saga if the round length allows.

Items do not persist between Saga matches. You bind a fresh loadout every match based on the mode rotation. The optimal Pocket Item choice changes per mode:

Offensive items

Offensive items convert neutral play into kills. The two strongest offensive items in the launch build are:

ItemEffectBest mode
Magic BombExplodes for 80 damage in a 5m radiusAny
Mega Punch GloveNext attack deals 3x damageAny

Magic Bomb is the highest single-target burst in the item pool. Bind it on your squad’s primary damage carry and use it to finish low-HP pilots before they can escape. The 5-meter radius makes it a strong counter to grouping squads.

Mega Punch Glove stacks with your character’s combo strings. The optimal use is to activate it before a combo and let the boosted damage carry through the entire string. On Merlin, this turns the magic missile into a 42% damage hit.

Defensive items

Defensive items convert incoming pressure into survival windows. The three strongest defensive items are:

ItemEffectBest mode
Freeze WandFreezes the target for 2 secondsLong Live the King
Mirror ShieldReflects the next attack back at the attackerAny
Shield CharmAbsorbs one eliminationAny

Freeze Wand is the strongest defensive item in the game. Bind it on your squad’s back-line carry every round. The freeze buys 2 seconds of zone control, which is enough to land a full combo or escape a chase.

Mirror Shield counters every dash-based character in the roster. Bind it when the opposing squad has a Frog Prince or Pinocchio. The reflected attack deals damage to the attacker and stuns them for 0.5 seconds.

Shield Charm is the panic button. Bind it on your squad’s most important pilot (typically the Carrier in Capture the Flag or the King in Long Live the King). The shield absorbs one elimination and gives your squad a second chance to recover.

Mobility items

Mobility items convert positioning into tempo. The three strongest mobility items are:

ItemEffectBest mode
Rocket BootsAdds a second jump that travels 8 metersBasketball
Gravity BootsHold to slow your fall and adjust your arcSumo
Speed BoostIncreases sprint speed for 8 secondsBasketball

Rocket Boots is the only item that gives your pilot a second jump off the platform. Bind it on the Carrier in Capture the Flag or the chaser in Sumo. The 8-meter jump lets you cross gaps that no other item can.

Gravity Boots is the highest-skill mobility item. The hold-to-slow-fall mechanic lets you adjust your arc mid-air, which is the basis for every advanced edge-guard string. Bind it on Pinocchio or Frog Prince for the strongest edge-control rotations.

Speed Boost is the simplest and most reliable mobility item. Bind it on your squad’s primary damage carry every round. The 8-second sprint window lets you chase down opposing pilots or escape from a lost fight.

Support items

Support items convert squad coordination into resource advantage. The two strongest support items are:

ItemEffectBest mode
MedkitRestores 50% HP to the squadSumo
Magnet CharmPulls all coins and items toward youCoin Rush

Medkit is the only squad-healing item in the launch build. Bind it on your squad’s support pilot (typically Goldilocks or Sleeping Beauty). The 50% HP restore is the strongest single-team-fight swing in the game.

Magnet Charm is the strongest objective-mode item. The pull effect lets your Carrier grab the opposing flag in Capture the Flag without crossing the full arena, or lets your Runner collect all the coins in Coin Rush without chasing them down.

Chaos items

Chaos items convert reads into round swings. The five strongest chaos items are:

ItemEffectBest mode
Big Top HatKnocks opposing pilots backwardsBasketball
Pocket DecoySpawns a clone that distracts opposing pilotsAny
Anchor DropTeleports the user back to the centreSumo
Lightning StrikeCalls down a lightning bolt on the targetRed-Light-Green-Light
Vision CharmReveals opposing pilots on the map for 10 secondsLong Live the King

Big Top Hat is the strongest single chaos item. The knockback triggers on contact with any opposing pilot, which makes it a panic-button for back-line carries and an edge-control tool for Sumo pilots.

Pocket Decoy is the highest-skill chaos item. The clone mirrors your movements and draws opposing pilot aggro for 5 seconds. Bind it on Frog Prince or Pinocchio for the strongest clone-bait combos.

Anchor Drop is the only recovery item in the launch build. Bind it on your squad’s Carrier in Sumo rounds — the teleport back to centre recovers from a knock-off and lets you rejoin the fight.

Lightning Strike is the strongest single-target burst chaos item. Bind it on your squad’s sniper (typically Merlin or Robin Hood) and use it to eliminate low-HP pilots who try to hide behind cover.

Vision Charm is the strongest objective-mode chaos item. The 10-second reveal lets your squad track opposing pilots across the entire map. Bind it on the squad’s Sniper in Long Live the King or Capture the Flag.

Anti-Pocket tech

Every Pocket Item has a counter. The strongest anti-Pocket tech strings are:

  • Anti-Freeze Wand — dodge-cancel on the freeze startup frame. The dodge covers enough distance to escape the freeze radius.
  • Anti-Magic Bomb — Rocket Boots out of the 5-meter radius. The second jump activates the same frame the bomb lands.
  • Anti-Mirror Shield — switch to a non-attack action the moment the opposing pilot activates Mirror Shield. The reflected attack only fires on offensive actions.
  • Anti-Magnet Charm — stand on the flag pedestal. The pull effect does not work on pilots standing on the pedestal.

Practise these counters in Practice mode before ranked lobbies. The optimal counter timing is the first 3 frames after the opposing pilot activates the item.
