Punch Upon a Time Basketball Mode Guide

Score dunks, steal the ball, and read the shot clock in this 2v2 score-attack mode.

Last updated:

Basketball is the canonical 2v2 score-attack mode in Punch Upon a Time. Two squads face off across a court; the squad that scores the most dunks before the timer ends wins the round. This page covers positioning, dunk timing, Pocket Item picks, and the squad compositions that win Basketball rounds consistently.

Court layout and win condition

Basketball is played on a court split into two halves, with a single hoop on each side. Each squad has four pilots in a typical Squad Saga match (because Basketball is the 2v2 mode and your squad of three plus a substitute counts as four total). The objective is simple: grab the ball, dunk it in the opposing hoop, and prevent the other squad from dunking in yours.

The shot clock is 60 seconds. The squad with the most dunks at the buzzer wins. Ties go to sudden-death overtime, where the first dunk wins.

Positioning and rotation

Basketball rewards squads that rotate rather than chase. The optimal rotation is:

  • One defender stays near the hoop, ready to block incoming dunks.
  • One midfielder plays the middle of the court, intercepting ball passes.
  • Two forwards pressure the opposing hoop and contest dunks.

If your squad has only three pilots, the midfielder doubles as the second forward when the ball is on your offensive half.

Dunk timing and combos

The fastest dunk in Basketball is the pickup combo:

  1. Pick up the ball with a basic attack.
  2. Sprint toward the hoop with the dodge button (dodge cancel preserves your sprint).
  3. Jump and press the attack button at the apex of the jump.
  4. Land and immediately dodge backwards to avoid the steal attempt.

This combo takes about three seconds to execute from pickup to dunk. Mastering it is the difference between winning and losing Basketball rounds.

Best characters for Basketball

The strongest Basketball characters are ranged specialists and grapplers who can interrupt opposing dunks:

  • Merlin — his ranged wand attacks interrupt opposing dunks at mid-range.
  • Frog Prince — his high mobility makes him the fastest dunk in the roster.
  • Pinocchio — his puppet ultimate locks down an entire defensive zone.

Avoid tanks and supports in Basketball — they cannot generate dunks fast enough to compete with the specialists.

Pocket Item picks

The strongest Pocket Items for Basketball are:

  • Big Top Hat — knocks opposing pilots backwards when they approach the hoop.
  • Speed Boost — extends your dodge distance and your sprint speed.
  • Freeze Wand — freezes any opposing pilot who tries to interrupt your dunk.

Avoid healing Pocket Items in Basketball — there is no time to use them between dunks.

Common mistakes

The two most common Basketball mistakes are ball-chasing (all three pilots chase the ball instead of rotating) and shot-clock burning (taking too long to attempt a dunk and letting the clock run out). Always keep at least one defender near your hoop, and always attempt a dunk before the shot clock crosses 30 seconds.

Advanced comps and squad picks

The strongest Basketball squads in the 12-player Squad Saga rotation pair a high-mobility dunker (Frog Prince or Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk) with a control midfielder (Merlin or Pinocchio) and a back-line defender (Three Little Pigs or Sleeping Beauty). The dunker pulls aggression, the midfielder reads passes with Puppet String or wand poke, and the back-line defender guards the rim with Brick House or Thorn Wall when the opposing squad pushes a dunk.

Greedier lineups that run triple-dunkers (Frog Prince + Jack + Robin Hood) win the first 30 seconds of a round but lose to any squad that runs Big Top Hat or Gravity Boots at the rim. The 60-second shot clock means a single well-timed defensive item wipes a triple-dunker comp. Aim for two offensive slots and one defensive slot in standard Basketball.

Reading the shot clock and overtime rules

The shot clock display turns amber at 30 seconds and red at 10 seconds. Once the clock crosses 30 seconds, the defending squad gains a brief mark on the ball carrier, which lets Big Top Hat and Freeze Wand land with extra knockback. Once the clock crosses 10 seconds, the dunker’s pickup combo gains a 10% dunk-speed bonus so that desperation dunks can still land before the buzzer. Overtime starts after a tied regular round and ends on the first successful dunk, with no second-chance rebounds.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How long does a Basketball round last?

The shot clock is 60 seconds, plus sudden-death overtime if tied. Most Basketball rounds last 90–120 seconds in real time.

Can I block a dunk?

Yes — stand under the hoop and press attack at the moment the opposing pilot reaches the apex of the dunk jump. Successful blocks send the ball flying and reset the play.

Does the frog skin affect Basketball performance?

No — the frog skin is purely cosmetic. Character stats and abilities are identical to the host character.

Does Basketball count for Pocket Item Roulette wins?

Yes — any mode win in the event rotation counts, including Basketball, so a squad that wins four rounds of Basketball over a weekend still completes the three-in-a-row badge challenge.

Why does my dunk sometimes miss the hoop?

The dunk window is six frames at the apex of the jump. Pressing attack too early or too late whiffs off the rim and lets the defender reset the play. The pick-up combo on this page is the only reliable input.
